The pelvis can be classified according to characteristic shapes. Features used in this classification of the bony pelvis (following Caldwell and Moloy, 1933) concern the shape of the pelvic brim, the subpubic arch, and the greater sciatic notch. Classifications such as these grew out of the usefulness of data on pelvic dimensions during childbirth. Some of these classes are more common in females, some are more common in males. The existence of these classifications should be acknowledged but memorization of the features specific to each class is not necessary to the beginning student.
