TO GET NETWORK SERVICES

Before using the network here at Hopkins, you must register your computer, using this form (PDF format)). It’s easy to do, but you need to know a few things about your computer.  Note: you MUST have a network card (NIC/Ethernet Card), to connect to the network. You must be able to connect to the network without using your modem. If you cannot do this, you need to purchase a network card (NIC/ethernet card).

  1. MAC (media access control) address - identifies your computer on the network. You can find the MAC address by following these steps:


a)  Click your mouse button on the  START menu on your computer desktop (you will
see a list above the START menu) – (see arrow 1)

b)  Click on RUN (a dialog box will appear) – (see arrow 2)


 

 


 

 

c)        In the dialog box type CMD and click OK (a command line window will appear)

d)       In the command window, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press

RETURN or ENTER.

e)        (a list of items will appear on the screen).

f)  You are interested in the PHYSICAL ADDRESS (highlighted in above example).
This is a 12 digit number separated by hyphens, similar to 01–02–03–04–05–06.

                       Make a note of this number and enter it on the attached form.

1) MAC (media access control) address -  identifies your computer on the network.
You can find the MAC address by following these steps:

a) Click on the Apple (see arrow 1) in the upper left hand corner of screen, and a list
of options will appear. Drag the mouse pointer down until APPLE SYSTEM PROFILER
(see arrow 2) is highlighted, and click.

 

 

 

 

 

 



 

b)        The APPLE SYSTEM PROFILER window will open, with a list of items displayed. You are
interested in the Network Overview item.

c)        Click on the arrow next to NETWORK OVERVIEW on the left side of the screen, and again
on the arrow next to APPLE TALK  to expand the list.

d)  The information you need to complete the network services form is listed as HARDWARE
ADDRESS
(circled in above example).

                       Make a note of this number and enter it on the attached form.

1)        MAC (media access control) address -  identifies your computer on the network. You can find
the MAC address by following these steps:

a)        Go to the upper left corner of your computer, and click on the Apple (see arrow 1). The Apple
Menu will appear. Drag the pointer down until LOCATION (see arrow 2) is highlighted.

b)        Move your mouse over and down and click on NETWORK PREFERENCES .

c)        The NETWORK PREFERENCES window will open.

d)       The information you need is listed as Ethernet Address (circled in above example).

                       Make a note of this number and enter it on the attached form.
