Tutorial Name: Cellular adaptations
ConceptName: Hypertrophy
Slide Name: Hypertrophy of smooth muscle(low)

Image Description: Sworled bundles of smooth muscle cells in the wall of the uterus. Note vessels within the hypertrophied muscle. The organ weight is greater than normal because of the hypertrophy, which involves the entire organ. Since myocytes are enlarged but otherwise normal, these cells would need to be compared side-by-side with normal uterine smooth muscle cells in a normal uterus to fully appreciate the cell enlargement.

Structures Structure Descriptions
hypertrophied smooth muscle Hypertrophied muscle fibers are larger than those in normal myometrium
dilated vascular channels Note red blood cells intraluminally.
