Image Description: Higher magnification of the granulomas shows epitheloid cells, giant cells and some lymphocytes. There is no necrosis in the granuloma. Note apparent foreign material in giant cell (just below and to the right of center). |
|
| Structures | Structure Descriptions |
| lung parenchyma | Note the moderate amount of inflammation in adjacent alveoli (lower left). |
| granuloma | The border between granuloma and normal parenchyma can be distinguished by noting the amount of fibrous tissue in the granuloma compared to the relative absence in the normal tissue (low left and center). |
| giant cell | The giant cells for the most part have nuclei arranged concentrically around the periphery of the cell. |
| epithelioid cell | The granuloma features fused epithelioid cells (giant cells) and non-fused epithelioid cells. |
| lymphocytes | These are smaller and have rounder and more uniform nuclei than do the macrophages and epithelioid cells. |
