The pubic bones meet at the midline to form a fibrocartilaginous joint called the pubic symphysis. It is thought that some separation at this joint occurs during the later stages of pregnancy (third trimester). The sacro-iliac joint is a synovial joint between the sacrum and ilia.  The surfaces of each bone that make up the sacroiliac joints are complementary in their rough topography, adding to the stability of this joint.
