To introduce the muscular pelvic diaphragm, we provide this sagittal view of the pelvis looking laterally. The piriformis muscle and obturator internus muscles provide a large surface area on the internal aspect of the pelvis. The piriformis muscle is covered with a thin fascia. We will first introduce the generalized structure of the pelvic diaphragm. Then we will describe how the pudendal nerve, destined for structures located inferior to the diaphragm, reaches its targets without piercing the diaphragm. Next we will introduce the named muscles of the pelvic diagphram.
